Rolex Entry Level Sport Watch for Beginners: Explorer I

Production period of Explorer I ref 14270 was from 1989 to 2001。36mm case diameter without crown. This watch was extremely HOT because of the famous Japanese idol Kimura Takuya. After the fever, 14270 price was down to a reasonable price level. Its size is relatively small according to current standard. At present, Sep. 2023, the pre-used watch price is about USD5000-6000 depending pn condition.
Simple design with black dial. Large Arabic 369 number and its big triangle at 00:00 position. The design is simple. And, 14270 was related with the adventurous story of climbing the Mount Everest. This is an ever green model as a daily wear watch. And, it is probably the "cheapest" Rolex sport watch in the market.
The predecessor of 14270 was ref 1016 (1963 to 1989). The price of this vintage watch is quite expensive. Probably exceeding USD12500-. For some version, it will be well over than that.
In 2001, new model 114270 (2001 to 2010) was launched to replace 14270. It comes with new movement cal 3130. Also, the end links of the band were changed to solid end links (SEL). Previously, the end links were hollows. The links would be deformed after long term usage. The adoption of the SEL solved this problem.
The outlook of 114270 is basically identical to 14270.
In 2010, Rolex chose to face the market and enlarged the size of the Explorer I to 39mm case. This was the ref 214270. At the same time, new movement call 3132 was used.

This 214270 come with random serial started from 2009. Serial numbers was engraved inside the watch ring beneath the cover. From then onward, it is difficult to date a watch without a birth certificate.

Red circle at the middle marks the laser crown logo on cover. This is a counter fake measure taken from 2002 onwards. The logo is located at the 30 minute position. I have examined the layout of the crown. It was documented in my ebook.
LRL and case condition, a review: From photo 2, LRL on the watch legs demonstrated that the case is in very good condition. This is further proved by photo 3. Please be noted that LRL need not to be a pure lighting lines. They could be a combination of light and darkness as per the 4 red circles in photo 3.
