Why ref 6694 as an entry level Rolex for beginners:
1) Ref 6694 roughly started production from 1954 and ended in 1989. Large quantity available. Very old vintage over 50 years to relatively young (less than 40 years) can be found in the market.
2) Budget wise, 6694 is about USD2000 - 3000 now (Sept 2023) depending on dial specification and condition. The risk is relatively reduced even if you made a bad decision in buying something wrong.
3) There are various combinations of different colour dials for purchase.
4) The watch movements , basically cal 1215 and 1225, are quite simple. Rolex still provides services for ref 6694. It is also very easy to find private watch maker for servicing.
Start with ref 6694 and polish your own personal skills for watch evaluation through real practice. Preparing yourself moving to next level through the vintage watch hunting adventure. That is very interesting and exciting!
Things to note:
1) 6694 is a 34mm case (excluding crown) watch. Definitely it is treated as "small" by current standard. But, back to reality, vintage watch of the past were usually with a 29mm to 34mm case. Collecting vintage watch is about elegant and taste. These two things for sure are NOT decided by size.
2) 6694 is a manual winding watch, not automatic watch.
Rolex 6694 is a simple design watch. And, simple is beauty. Several good condition 6694 with different colour dials are listed below for reference. Links to my google album will have a lot HD photos for further examination. This is a good chance to practise those evaluation skills learned from the previous chapters.

Last blog stated that flat plated crown was used till mod 1960's. Why did this one have one? Changing dials is allowed and quite normal in the past especially from 1970's to 2000. Even Rolex change dials for her own clients. Being a Rolex dress watch, dial miss match is not a big problem. But, it will be a big matter for Rolex vintage sport watch.
